Function/Duties of Position
The Staff Physician is the primary medical/clinical leader of the Interdisciplinary Treatment Team and provides psychiatric and medical care to patients under his/her care. The Unit Physician is responsible for the admission and discharge of patients to the Unit, psychiatric and physical examinations, formulation of diagnosis and treatment plans, and performing clinical treatments directly as well as monitoring clinical treatments done by others. Specific duties include:
- Performing psychiatric, physical, and neurological examinations.
- Writing orders for patient care.
- Conducting meetings of the ward Treatment Team to prepare individual patient Treatment Plans.
- Giving clinical leadership to services that implement them.
- Collaborating with the Unit Director to provide leadership to the Treatment Team in formulating and implementing plans for operation of the ward therapeutic environment.
- Providing direct service to patients such as group and individual counseling.
- Completing the medical record in accordance with requirements of Medical Staff Bylaws, rules and regulations, and hospital policies.
- Preparing correspondence communicating findings from patient evaluations to hospital administration, judges, PSRB, and attorneys.
- Serving on medical staff committees.
- Participating in peer review, quality assurance, and utilization review activities.
- Assisting with training and continuing education of Hospital Staff.
- Participating in continuing education and maintaining qualifications to perform techniques of basic life support (CPR).
- Attending medical staff meetings.
- Participating in mutually agreed upon reasonable activities in community and hospital settings of direct interest to OHSU and DHS.
The primary work site will be the Salem Campus of the Oregon State Hospital.
OHSU is a teaching facility, and you may be expected to teach medical students and residents in the clinical setting as well as through assigned lectures during the course of the year. You will receive your teaching assignments from the Director of Education.
There are resources available for start-up research and ongoing support. Faculty interested in doing research may apply for departmental research assistance and non-clinical time through the Director of Research.
Administrative and other duties may be assigned based upon department needs and your areas of expertise and interest. There will be opportunities to participate in departmental management and to serve on institutional committees.

- Board eligible or board-certified Psychiatrist
